Great reception of ICMAB-CSIC materials science LAB TOUR in Soria during the European Researchers’ Night

 

The participation of the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) in the European Researchers’ Night in Soria was very well received. More than one hundred people took part in the activities on materials science organized by researchers Judith Oró, Stefania Sandoval and Daniel Martín, in an event that combined science outreach, interactive learning, and public enthusiasm.

The event, held on September 26 at the Casino Círculo Amistad Numancia in Soria, focused on materials science and gathered more than 100 attendees, including secondary school teachers, high school and middle school students, and families. The youngest participants played a leading role, enjoying the hands-on scientific workshops.

The ICMAB-CSIC proposal included a talk on nanoscience and several workshops on electricity and magnetism, optical and electron microscopy, and optics and light interaction. These activities brought the audience closer to the world of advanced materials and to the applications of research in everyday life.

This event was part of the LAB TOUR project of ICMAB-CSIC, a science outreach initiative aimed at bringing science closer to different communities while also fostering cultural and heritage exchange. LAB TOUR is supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) - Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Ruralia, and the Provincial Council of Soria.

During their stay in Soria, the researchers visited the facilities of the Food Quality Research Center (CCA-INIA/CSIC), the only CSIC center in the province of Soria, where researcher Eva Guillamón Fernández acted as CSIC ambassador in the territory. Guillamón showed them the facilities and explained the main research lines carried out at the center, which include food safety, food characterization, and the development of healthy products.

Beyond the strictly scientific activities, the visit to Soria also included cultural components. In line with the reciprocal spirit of the LAB TOUR project, the researchers took the opportunity to explore the local heritage, enjoy guided tours around the city and its surroundings, and take pictures in emblematic places. Their presence also attracted notable media interest, with interviews on local radio and appearances on television, reinforcing the impact of the project and its ability to connect with different audiences.

The LAB TOUR project will continue in Soria. The next visit of the researchers will take place in the spring of 2026, when they will reach six rural schools in the province, with the aim of bringing more scientific knowledge to communities with less access to outreach activities. This new stage seeks not only to bring science closer to students, but also to spark early vocations and to show that research is part of the future of all territories, regardless of their size or location.

With this action, ICMAB-CSIC reaffirms its commitment to take research beyond the laboratory, to build bridges between science, society and culture, and to contribute to making science accessible and inspiring for all audiences.
