European Researchers' Night in Soria – LAB TOUR Project

On September 26th, a team from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) will travel to Soria to participate in the European Researchers' Night, which will take place at the Casino Círculo Amistad Numancia.

Location: Casino Círculo Amistad Numancia, Soria
Date: September 26, 2025
Team: Judith Oró, Stefania Sandoval, and Daniel Martin-Jimenez (ICMAB-CSIC)

The event, open to the public, will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and will be divided into two parts:

Program

  • 6:00 PM – 6:15 PM | Informative Talk: LAB TOUR 2026
Presentation of the new project by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), developed by ICMAB. Its goal is to bring science closer to the province and rural areas in 2026. The main lines and activities will be explained.
  • 6:15 PM – 6:55 PM | The Power of the Small: Discovering Nanoscience
An outreach talk by ICMAB researchers who will show how matter is manipulated at the nanometric scale, its applications in everyday life, and why nanoscience is transforming today's society.
  • 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Simultaneous Outreach Workshops
Attendees can rotate between three practical workshops:
    • Light and Optics
Live experiments exploring the light spectrum beyond the visible. Phenomena such as fluorescence, chemiluminescence, and refractive index will be demonstrated, along with applications using lasers and ultraviolet light, revealing what the human eye cannot perceive on its own.
    • Electricity and Magnetism
An interactive workshop to discover the basics of electricity and magnetism. Participants will learn to use a multimeter, distinguish between conductive and insulating materials, and experiment with carbon conductivity and natural materials with magnetic properties.
    • Optical and Electron Microscopy
A practical introduction to the microscopic world. Starting with observing samples using an optical microscope, then moving on to the electron microscope. Through a game, participants will match images from the nano and micro worlds, accompanied by a model that helps understand how an electron microscope works.
