ICMAB-CSIC is a global, multidisciplinary reference research centre specialising in cutting-edge research on functional materials for electronics, energy, and health. It promotes the knowledge transfer and is characterised by its internationalisation and inclusion and diversity education policies.

The excellence

The excellence of the institute has been recognized by obtaining the Severo Ochoa seal of excellence in 3 consecutive calls 2016-2027. This fact allows ICMAB-CSIC to prioritize both collaboration in international projects and the attraction of talent at all labour and scientific levels for a decade.

HR Excellence in Research

As a CSIC centre, the institute joined the objectives of the “Charter & Code for Researchers” in 2011 and since 2020 the Human Resources for Researchers (HRS4R) strategy through the quality seal awarded by the European Commission "HR Excellence in Research” to CSIC.

Talent Policies

To promote talent policies, ICMAB-CSIC has a committee for recruiting, attracting and retaining talent and has recently created the talent attraction office, which is part of the strategic projects unit.

Extensive Training Activity

In addition, ICMAB-CSIC stands out for its extensive training activity at doctoral and postdoctoral levels. The institute has coordinated 2 Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND doctoral training programs on advanced functional materials: DOCFAM (2017-2022) and DOCFAM+ (2023-2028). In total, 48 doctoral students have been trained (18 at the ICMAB-CSIC).

ICMAB Training Programs

Training is a tool for integration, development and professional updating. ICMAB-CSIC recognizes that quality training activities are a tool to optimize people's abilities and promote their professional development as well as to facilitate the growth and achievement of the institution's objectives.

Mission of ICMAB-CSIC

The mission of ICMAB-CSIC is to generate knowledge and train people in the area of Advanced Materials Science to transfer it to society. This objective can only be achieved, on the one hand, by encouraging cutting-edge research, both basic and innovative, and, on the other, by making available to all the institute's staff the necessary means to update and develop their technical, scientific and transversal skills.

Training areas

ICMAB-CSIC offers comprehensive internal formation to all staff in the areas of:

  • Health and Safety (compulsory)
  • Technical or scientific/technical, according to the needs of the position
  • Transversal skills such as creativity, critical and innovative thinking, entrepreneurship, IPR management, leadership, networking, team work, group cohesion, public speaking, project management, time management, decision-making, ethics in research, conflict management, communication, dissemination, among others.

SEMINARS, LECTURES, THEMATIC SCHOOLS AND WORKSHOPS

ICMAB Periodical Lectures

Organised by the Seminars and Training Committee, these seminars are given by invited speakers (from around the world) who provide information on a topic of general interest to most of the researchers, and seek collaboration among the ICMAB researchers.

They are held every 2nd Monday at 12 pm at the Institute. Coffee and cookies are offered at 11:45 am. If you have a suggestion for a speaker, please let the Seminars and Training Committee know.

Invited Seminars

ICMAB researchers, invite renowned speakers to give a talk. They are  working on topics of particular interest to the Institute.

They take place any day of the week, and usually at 12 pm or 3 pm.

Technical Days

These are one-day thematic workshops dedicated to one of the experimental techniques available at the ICMAB Scientific and technical services and open to all our research staff.

International experts and researchers from the ICMAB and surrounding institutes and universities give pedagogical and informative lectures that serve as an introduction to the fundamentals of the technique and its capabilities and applications. The workshops organized so far include:

  • Proximity Microscopies
  • X-ray Diffraction
  • Spectroscopy (including NMR, EPR, Raman)
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy
  • Computational methods and Modeling
  • Magnetometry
  • Clean Room Nanofabrication Techniques

Research Line workshops

Each year, a different Research Line organises a workshop, usually 2 long, with international invited speakers, giving PhD candidates and postdocs the opportunity to present their research and expose them to a stimulating international environment.

Summer schools

Summer schools are specifically designed for Master students and PhD fellows.

Week-long schools aimed to present the design, development and application of new materials for a wide range of applications, from energy, to electronics and nanomedicine. Apart from the lectures from international and local scientists, the students also participate in hands-on activities at the ICMAB laboratories, and participate in networking activities

JPhD

Every year we encourage a group of PhD candidates from the Barcelona Nanocluster in Bellaterra (BNC-b), which includes ICMAB, ICN2, IBM-CNM, ALBA Synchrotron and UAB, to form an organising committee to organise the BNC-b PhD Scientific Meeting, JPhD.

This is a two-day workshop where some PhD candidates are in charge of the organization and the others participate in the workshop and present their research in flash talks or poster presentations. The meeting also includes a c number of invited speakers on science-related topics. The different institutions provide the infrastructure support and funding.
