Knowledge Transfer Unit

The ICMAB´s Technology Transfer Unit was created on November 1997. Its mission is to collaborate with the ICMAB´s Managing Direction in the activities for the transference of the Centers research results with the aim of spreading and applying the scientific knowledge to the industry’s technological level improvement. 

Our Objectives

  • Managing technology offers: We collaborate with researchers to evaluate, protect, and commercialize innovations developed at ICMAB. This includes promoting our scientific and technical services to potential industry partners.

  • Identifying industry needs: By engaging with the industrial sector, we gain insights into technical challenges and align them with ICMAB's capabilities, fostering collaborative projects. We actively participate in the local innovation ecosystem, enhancing interactions with research centers, technology hubs, and industry associations.

  • Promoting collaborative projects: We encourage and support industrial projects at local, national, and European levels, collaborating with technology centers to valorize research outcomes.

  • Supporting spin-off creation: We advise entrepreneurial researchers on establishing spin-offs to commercialize ICMAB technologies and assist in connecting with investors specializing in technology-based enterprises.

  • Fostering entrepreneurship: We stimulate researchers' participation in entrepreneurship programs and organize training activities on industrial property, technology transfer, and business development.

Meet the Team

The Head of the Unit is Alfonso del Rey. Miquel Galindo is the Technology Transfer Officer and Gerard Albújer is the technician in charge of the Prototype Service.

The team specializes in commercializing research, fostering industry collaborations, and supporting spin-offs. Their work ensures scientific innovations translate into real-world applications.

Bridging Research and Innovation

The Knowledge Transfer Unit at ICMAB is dedicated to transforming scientific discoveries into real-world applications. Our mission is to connect research with industry, facilitating collaborations, licensing agreements, and the creation of innovative products and services.

Our Key Activities

  • Technology Transfer & Licensing – Identifying and protecting intellectual property (IP), managing patents, and facilitating licensing agreements with industry partners.
  • Industry Collaboration – Establishing partnerships between ICMAB researchers and companies to develop cutting-edge solutions.
  • Prototyping & Engineering Support – Through the Prototype Laboratory, we assist researchers in developing functional and demonstrative prototypes for technology validation.
  • Entrepreneurship & Startups – Supporting spin-offs and startup creation, offering guidance on business development and funding opportunities.
  • Funding & Grants for Innovation – Assisting in securing national and international funding for technology transfer projects.

Prototype Laboratory

Since 2023, the Prototype Laboratory service provides expertise in turning research into practical applications. Alfonso del Rey is the responsible of the service, and Gerard Albujer the technician that works on it. 

Our Services

The Prototype Laboratory offers a range of technical support, including:

  • Engineering advice
  • Parametric 3D modeling
  • Part manufacturing via FDM additive manufacturing, machining, or manual methods
  • Design and manufacturing of electrical and electronic circuits
  • Computer simulations in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and structural/dynamic mechanics

Service Prioritization

To enhance technology transfer at ICMAB, we have classified our tasks into three categories with assigned priorities to structure the technician’s work plan:

  1. Functional Prototypes – Design and/or fabrication of a functional prototype as the final result of a research project. (Highest priority)
  2. Demonstrative Prototypes – Development of prototypes showcasing the technology behind a research project.
  3. Other Requests – Design and/or fabrication of tools, holders, or devices required for material characterization and production in research.
