On 29 November 2024 the MAV Cluster Day, organized by Clúster de Materials Avançats de Catalunya (Clúster MAV), was held at the Hotel AC Gavà Mar. This event brought together experts, companies and institutions from the sector to share knowledge and recognise transformative projects in the fields of innovation, sustainability and Industry 4.0, making the MAV Day a key space for driving innovation and fostering collaborations in the advanced materials sector.
On this day, after two speeches by Ricardo del Valle (Senior Innovation Manager specialised in Advanced Materials at BAX) and Maria Dolors Nuñez (Leader of the Analysis and Detection of Technological Opportunities Team at ACCIÓ), the first efition of the MAV Awards was held.
A total of 22 projects were presented in the three categories: Innovation, Sustainability and 4.0 Industry. Among them, two were by ICMAB researchers: one by Daniel Herrera, from the FunNanoSurf group, who presented the SUBLIMAT project, and one by Sergi Riera, from the NANOPTO group, who presented the TERRA project. Each of the 22 finalists had four minutes to present their project, in which they had to convince the audience, who decided in a popular voting, the winning projects.
About the TERRA project
Sergi Riera, from the NANOPTO group, presented the TERRA project. This project aims to integrate stable organic photovoltaics mini-modules on bus stops to power light devices for a future smart city. In recent years, the efficiency of emerging photovoltaic technologies has increased significantly, which has involved their initial commercialization. Among these technologies, organic photovoltaic stands out for its low cost due to its ease of production and the materials used, its flexibility, and the ease of adjusting the color and transparency of the photovoltaic modules.

About the SUBLIMAT project
Daniel Herrera, from the FunNanoSurf group, presented the SUBLIMAT project, which is focused on the development of a family of compact, portable and modular sublimation systems that allow organic composites to be deposited on different surfaces. The SUBLIMAT family is specially conceived and designed with the aim of promoting the study of new organic materials in the manufacture of electronic devices such as OLEDs and solar cells.
Awardees
Sergi Riera won the MAV Awards in the Innovation category with his project TERRA. The audience especially valued the quality of his presentation. The project received 23.6% of the audience votes in this category.
In the Sustainability category, the winner project was Bones for Carbon Capture, from the UPC, presented by Marc Arnau; and in the 4.0 Industry category the winner project was Powering the Next Generation of Smart Factories, from FABREX company, presented by Pol Guixé.
