By tuning some of the properties of the organic polymers, used in the fabrication of organic solar cells, such as its molecular weight, researchers have found an increase of power conversion efficiency three-times higher. This has led to efficiencies exceeding 10 % in solar cells produced with the blade-coating system.
This increased efficiency is seen both by thin and thick active layers.
Also, the higher the molecular weight of the polymers used, the higher the thermal stability, making these solar cells more durable, which is important for outdoor applications of these materials.
This research, which is part of the TERRA project, showcases the potential of integrating organic photovoltaics into urban infrastructure, such as bus shelters, to harness diffuse sunlight and contribute to sustainable urban energy solutions.
