“Quàntica i l’ICMAB” exhibition inaugurated at ICMAB to celebrate the International Year of Quantum
On Tuesday, 30 September 2025, ICMAB inaugurated its new exhibition “Quàntica i l’ICMAB” (Quantum and ICMAB) at the Carles Miravitlles Hall. The event, which marks the start of the 2025–2026 academic year, is part of the activities celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, commemorating 100 years since the foundations of quantum mechanics.
Exploring quantum research at ICMAB
The exhibition showcases ICMAB’s contributions to quantum science through three research areas: molecular qubits, spintronics, and superconductivity. It also features a chronology of quantum milestones, posters, 3D models and interactive objects designed to bring abstract concepts closer to the public. Materials are available in both Catalan and English to reach the entire ICMAB community and visitors.

Presentations by the researchers
The inauguration began with a short introduction by Anna Drou, who also presented the three scientific speakers.
- Elena Bartolomé (LMI) spoke about molecular qubits, molecules designed chemically to act as quantum units of information. These qubits can be organized in networks, integrated on surfaces, and scaled up for use in quantum devices. Their reproducibility and tunability make them a promising platform for quantum computing and simulation.
- Can Onur Avci (MULFOX) presented spintronics, which exploits not only the electron’s charge but also its spin, a quantum property that can be imagined as a tiny compass. This line of research aims at developing more efficient memories, sensors, and even hybrid quantum technologies, paving the way for faster and greener information technologies.
- Anna Palau (SuperQMat) introduced superconductors, materials that can conduct electricity without resistance when cooled below a critical temperature. At ICMAB, researchers design superconducting materials for ultrasensitive sensors and secure quantum communication, crucial for space telescopes and next-generation quantum networks.
Their talks made clear how fundamental quantum phenomena underpin much of today’s cutting-edge research at ICMAB.
Seminar by Víctor Canivell
The ceremony continued with a seminar by Víctor Canivell (President and co-founder of Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech), hosted by former ICMAB Director Xavier Obradors. In his talk, “The future of Quantum Computing and its impact on society”, Canivell gave an accessible and inspiring overview of the progress in quantum technologies and their potential to transform industries and society.

A toast to quantum science
After the seminar, attendees enjoyed a visit to the exhibition and celebrated the inauguration with a toast of cava. The atmosphere was festive, with participants expressing pride in ICMAB’s achievements and enthusiasm for the year ahead.
ICMAB Director David Amabilino congratulated the organizing team, emphasizing both the Institute’s strong tradition and ongoing impact in quantum research and the importance of making science accessible to the community.
Looking ahead
Over the coming months, guided visits will be organized for UAB students and ICMAB staff, ensuring that more people can engage with the exhibition and discover the Institute’s role in advancing quantum science.
The “Quàntica i l’ICMAB” exhibition is open until 30 January 2026 at the ICMAB Hall. It is an invitation to explore how quantum phenomena shape modern technologies and to celebrate the transformative potential of the quantum era.
