The #JPhD2021, an event entirely organized by PhD fellows, grows larger with each edition, surpassing the 100 participants!
The JPhD 2021 is the 6th edition of a Scientific Meeting that brings together PhD researchers from the members of the Barcelona Nanocluster-Bellaterra (BNC-b): the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institut de Microelectrònica de Barcelona. Centre Nacional de Microelectrònica (IMB-CNM), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC).
An event that started as a small gathering of PhD fellows of ICMAB 10 years ago has grown into an outstanding platform for networking and scientific communication.
After last years' online event, organizers were happy to be able to bring #JPhD2021 in a hybrid format, which could be followed from home or from the Sala d’Actes Carles Miravitlles at ICMAB. On 25 and 26 November, PhD researchers enjoyed oral presentations, a live poster session at the Facultat de Ciències of the UAB, workshops and interesting scientific plenary talks regarding current scientific issues given by established researchers in their own fields.

The closing event at the end of two intense days was the awards ceremony: attendants to the meeting could vote for the best presentations and posters throughout the event, and the winners received fantastic prizes. The awardees of this edition were:
Poster session at UAB Science Faculty.
The previous edition of the JPhD already broke all previous records with more than 80 attendants, and this year participation has gone even higher, with more than 100 participants in total. Of those, 30 participatns gave a talk during the two days of the event, and 25 presented a poster in the poster session.
Almost half (44) of all participants were ICMAB PhD researchers, 17 came from the UAB, 15 from IMB-CNM, 17 more from ICN2, and 18 that came from other various institutions.
The organizing committee was formed by 9 PhD researchers: Teresa Cardona, Aida Carreño, José Catalán, Marc Domingo, Aiswarya Kethamkuzhi, Naureen Khanam and Nanthilde Malandain from ICMAB, as well as Sofia Aslanidou from IMB-CNM and Jose María Castillo from ICN2. The organization wanted to share a message about their experience with everyone, specially with upcoming PhD fellows:
“This kind of events are a good opportunity for personal development, individually and also as a team. We had a small team this year, but most of us contributed from their place as best they could, and thus was the JPhD2021 as a fruit of those efforts. Having good team mates always helps, and in terms of that we were very lucky! And at this stage it is a learning process for all of us, there were some mistakes and lessons and lots of good time that we spent together planning and turning those plans in reality these last 5 months. We would like to thank all the participants and speakers for their valuable time and efforts to make this event successful.
And for the next year organizers we would like to say that keep a good communication among yourselves, it always helps. Good luck for the next year.”
