The program has represented an opportunity for fruitful discussions among researchers. We talked about research but we also discussed about the future of different areas across materials science.

The program started on Monday 27 October, with a visit to the ICMAB Scientific and Technical Services by Núria Crivillers and Bernat Bozzo, coordinators of the Services.

On Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29, the days were full of presentations and time for networking. Both external and internal young researchers explained their research projects and future challenges they wanted to focus on. 

Apart from that, other topics were discussed, such as careers beyond academia, how researchers can do real impact not only in science but also in society and how can a research group start doing transfer of knowledge. The main challenges the research groups are currently facing were also raised.

We also saw a success case of a transition from bench to market from Silvia Frutos, CTO and co-founder at SpliceBio, who delivered a really interesting and inspiring talk, and a roundtable with ERC Proof of Concept grantees, which enabled the audience to know more about these projects and what they imply. 

"Every now and then, I ask my team: What can we patent? How can this be useful? And similar questions like that. Our way of thinking research has changed" said one of the participants of this roundtable.

The last day, 30 October, was devoted to personal talks between the young Future Leaders and ICMAB senior researchers, to know more about their research topics and experience in their research career.

Thanks to Dolors Grillo, Laura Cabana, Coral Herranz, Patricia Hanon and Lucia Maginley for the involvement in the success of the event and to all the speakers for their insightful talks, which provided a broad perspective of materials science: Daniel Corzo, Gargi Joshi, Giulia Lavarda, Supriyo Naskar, Sergi Plana Ruiz, Sara Battista, Gabriele de Luca, Elisabet González Mira, Dean Kos, Judit Morlà Folch, Asier Rodriguez Muguruza, Núria Aliaga-Alcalde, Gerard Tobias-Rosell and Mariano Campoy-Quiles.
