A year at ICMAB in 10 videos

In this new recap post, we present a selection of recordings showcasing the variety of activities and seminars that took place at ICMAB over the past academic year.

From technical seminars to talks organized by ICMAB’s committees and strategic units, including the video to celebrate ICMAB’s 40th anniversary, we have selected a variety of videos so you can find one that you consider relevant for each relaxing moment of your holidays.

  1. ICMAB’s 40th anniversary institutional video

This year we celebrated ICMAB's 40th anniversary. Among many other activities, an ICMAB institutional video was released. The video presents the evolution of ICMAB’s research and the fields in which it stands at the forefront, as well as the history behind the centre's trajectory. If you still haven't watched it, this is your chance! Language: Catalan/English.

  1. CSIC’s “Protocolo de Intervención y Prevención del Acoso Laboral” presentation at ICMAB

ICMAB is committed to being a centre with zero tolerance for sexual harassment, harassment based on gender or sexual orientation, or any other kind of harrassment. Our goal is to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment for everyone.

The presentation of the CSIC's protocol for the intervention and prevention of workplace harrassment, presented here at ICMAB, is important to us all. Language: Spanish.

  1. “Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS): from fundamental principles to chemical sensing”, by Luca Guerrini

This ICMAB seminar, hosted by Judit Morlà, was one of the most widely attended ICMAB seminars of this past year. Luca Guerrini, from Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), presented his work on plasmonic nanomaterials applied to the Raman scattering (SERS) technique. Language: English.

  1. “Social Media in the dissemination of Science, Technology and Research Life”, by Anna May and David Amabilino

As a technical seminar, we highlight the one conducted by Anna May and David Amabilino on best practices for researchers on social media. In this one-hour seminar, the speakers discuss what researchers can achieve by using their social networks and their influence on how science is perceived. They also provide some tools and inspiration for both researchers who are new to social media and those already participating in online communities. Language: English.

  1. “What I have learnt from my technology transfer failures”, by Mariano Campoy

Another successful seminar was the one organized by the Knowledge Transfer Unit and given by Mariano Campoy-Quiles.

The NANOPTO group develops materials for energy applications, particularly solar cells and thermoelectric generators. During the research process, they have developed technologies for different industrial sectors and ventured into the technology transfer market. After many experiences and the creation of the spin-off Molecular Gate, Mariano explains and reflects on their experiences. Language: English.

  1. “Towards a more efficient cycle of materials”, by Laura Talens

The Sustainability Committee organizes seminars throughout the year as part of its activity to raise awareness and work towards a greener ICMAB.

In this seminar, the invited researcher was Laura Talens, from ICTA-UAB, and the talk was hosted by David Amabilino. Talens shared her expertise in the circular economy and environmental assessment tools that can be useful in research centres. Language: English.

  1. “Futur de la computació quàntica i impacte en la societat”, by Víctor Canivell

The seminar, given by Victor Canivell, co-founder of Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech and hosted by Xavier Obradors, coincided with the inauguration of the exhibition "Quantum at ICMAB", created as one of ICMAB's activities to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology in 2025.

The talk focused on the state of the art of quantum computing and its potential impacts on society. It also marked the beginning of a relationship between ICMAB researchers and Qilimanjaro. Language: Catalan.

  1. “Dynamic sound-induced tuning of quantum light emission from diverse quantum states”, by Snežana Lazić

A widely attended seminar organized by the Materials for Electronics research line was the one given by Snežana Lazić, from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and hosted by ICMAB researcher Zorica Konstantinovic.

The seminar, on controllable quantum emitters, reported the first proof-of-principle demonstration of dynamic real-time control. Language: English.

  1. “Hydrazone-Based Adaptive Materials”, by Ivan Aprahamian

The highlighted seminar of the Materials for Energy research line was given by Ivan Aprahamian, from Darmouth College in Hanover, and hosted by David Amabilino.

The presentation dealt with recent advances in hydrazone-based functional materials, with an emphasis on newly developed photochromic compounds that exhibit many interesting properties, including energy storage. Language: English.

  1. “Allotropic forms of carbon-from physics and materials science applications in biomedical engineering”, by Anna Karczemska

The selected Materials for Health seminar was the one given by Anna Karczemska, from the Lodz University of Technology, and hosted by Imma Ratera.

In the seminar she shared her expertise in carbon allotropes, especially their nanoscale forms, such as nanodiamonds, which combne unique surface properties, biocompatibility, and exceptional mechanical stability. The lecture highlighted the growing importance of carbon-based nanomaterials in biomedical engineering. Language: English.
