Atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides a powerful approach for the precise manipulation of ferroelectric domains. Superdomains, which are hierarchical assemblies of ferroelectric nanodomains, often exhibit unconventional morphologies that drive unique behaviors and functionalities. Achieving reliable control over these superdomains is crucial for optimizing the functional properties of ferroic materials. In this work1, we show that the trajectory of a biased AFM tip during scanning directly determines the resulting domain architecture in ferroelectric Pb₀.₆Sr₀.₄TiO₃. By carefully designing the scan path, we uncover a super-switching mechanism driven by superdomain nucleation and the stabilization of super-boundaries, enabling the creation of intricate topological polar configurations, including center-divergent/convergent and flux-closure domains.
Combining piezoresponse force microscopy with optical spectroscopy, we verify the tunable and topological nature of these emergent structures. Phase-field simulations further confirm the stability of these domains and emphasize the importance of the scan trajectory in sustaining complex defect states. This work paves the way for the precise, on-demand engineering of topological domains, facilitating the development of arrays of tunable superdomains for applications in neuromorphic systems and advanced nanoarchitectures. Our findings position scan path engineering as a fundamental tool for designing intricate topological structures, expanding the potential of nanolithography in ferroic materials.
