Abstract
Europe is the continent which is heating up most in the climate crisis, but we also have transgressed seven planetary boundaries. It is clear, that technological solutions alone will not save humankind, but we need a socio-ecological transformation. To achieve this under best conditions will take 20 years due to changes in infrastructure alone, while we are hitting several tipping points. So, everyone has to help. I will give examples for activities for students, for researchers and for administrators and will draw on experiences we have made in the alliance of societies for a sustainable future.
Short bio
Jürgen Rödel studied Materials Science in Germany and the UK and holds a PhD from UC Berkeley in Materials Science. He has been a full professor at TU Darmstadt from 1994 to 2024 before retirement. He has received the highest research awards in Germany for young scientists (Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz Price) and for senior scientists (Leibniz Price) and has a honorary professorship from USTB (Beijing). His research interests have been in electrical and mechanical properties of functional ceramics and recently in the communication of the sustainability crisis.
