Tailoring spiral magnetic order for room temperature applications

Abstract
This thesis investigates several non-collinear frustrated magnets as a platform for developing new spin-induced multiferroic and magnetoelectric materials. Magnetoelectric multiferroics are rare because the mechanisms generating electric and magnetic polarization are often mutually exclusive. The research focuses primarily on YBaCuFeO5 (YBCFO), which stands out as a unique chiral magnetic system exhibiting high-temperature spiral magnetic order driven by an unconventional order-by-disorder mechanism.
Various independent strategies were explored to enhance magnetic frustration and spiral stability above ambient temperature, as well as to stabilize new high-temperature spiral phases in layered Cu/Fe perovskite oxides structurally related to YBCFO. In addition, the mechanisms underlying spin-induced magnetoelectric and multiferroic properties were investigated in other selected non-collinear frustrated magnets, such as R–Cr titanates.
