Abstract

Programming scientific equipment yourself gives you the freedom to design and control an experiment exactly the way you want it. This practical workshop, in the form of a tutorial, will cover the basics of interacting with instruments through Python. During the workshop we will program a simple electrical measurement using serial and VISA instruments, covering the required software, connection and communication between instrument and computer, and implementation of a basic graphical user interface. The tutorial should give you a general example to start programming your first experiments in Python. Some prior knowledge of programming is beneficial, but not necessary to attend the workshop.

Short bio

Dean is a postdoctoral fellow in the eMolMat group at ICMAB. He obtained his PhD in physics at the University of Cambridge working on molecular electronics and plasmonics, combining electrical measurements with optics and spectroscopy. He is currently working on organic thin film transistors, optically probing charge traps in organic semiconductors.
