A smart, open-source rack for Eppendorf Tubes – Designed at ICMAB

The Prototype Laboratory at ICMAB has developed a practical and innovative rack for organizing Eppendorf tubes. This tool is designed to be easy to manufacture, low-cost, and useful for day-to-day laboratory work, with a focus on supporting the scientific community.

The specificities of this rack and what makes it special is:

  • Optimized for 3D printing – The design is optimized for easy 3D printing without the need for supports or additional bed adhesion.
  • Secure tube placement – The tubes stay firmly in place once inserted—even if the rack is turned upside down, they won’t fall out.
  • Stackable with orientation control – It includes alignment pins that make the racks easy to stack in only one direction, preventing them from being stacked incorrectly or sample batches from being flipped.
  • Open source and customizable – Most importantly, the design is open source and includes a generative geometry, allowing anyone to create their own rack with any number of rows and columns or make any modifications they see fit.

The prototype was printed using an Original Prusa XL, but the files can be used with most standard 3D printers.
