Multimodal multitechniques investigation of batteries at large scale facilities

Abstract

In the talk I will focus on the operando investigation of batteries at large scale facilities, particularly showing the multiscale multimodal approaches combining various neutron/x-rays scattering, spectroscopic and imaging methods, that we have been developing in Grenoble lately in the frame of the Battery Hub with ESRF. We have been investigating reaction and degradation mechanisms in different types of materials, e.g. anodes (graphite, silicon, composites), cathodes (NMC, LNO, LFP) and composite electrolytes, using both model (lab-scale) and real (including commercial) systems. Our recent interests lie in understanding the origins of heterogeneities and spatially resolve them at multiple scales, in function of battery parameters as C-rate, aging or overcharging conditions.

Short bio

Sandrine Lyonnard is a physicist specialized in the experimental study of functional materials and complex matter in the field of energy storage and conversion, using advanced neutron & synchrotron techniques. She has been studying the structure-transport relationships in nanostructured ionic materials as surfactants, polymers or hybrids used as electrolytes for fuel cells or batteries. Since ten years, she is developing operando methods to understand the evolutions of structures and characterize underlying reactions/mechanisms during device operation. She is serving, or served, in scientific boards and panels related to science at large scale facilities in France, UK, Germany. She is involved in several national strategic programs on energy (PEPR Hydrogen and Batteries), active in several european projects particularly within Battery 2030+, and coordinator of the European Battery Hub in Grenoble at ESRF.
