Introduction to Optical Profilometry by Interferometry: A new tool at ICMAB’s SCT

Abstract

In this technical seminar, we will present the recently acquired Optical Profilometer Profilm3D in the SPM laboratory, together with its integration into the surface characterization workflows of the ICMAB. Optical profilometry offers a non-contact, fast, and versatile approach to surface analysis, enabling high-resolution 3D mapping of a wide range of materials. We will briefly introduce the working principles of the technique and the specifications of the instrument. A diverse set of samples from different research groups has been tested, showcasing the strengths and also limitations of the method. Through selected examples, we will explore the instrument’s capabilities and try to highlight its potential use for the wide range of materials developed at the ICMAB.

Short bio

Markos Paradinas obtained his degree in Physics in 2007, specializing in Materials Physics. He completed a Master's in Materials Science (CITEM) at ICMAB-CSIC in 2008, focusing on the mechanical and electrical behavior of organic fibers using atomic force microscopy (AFM). He earned his Ph.D. in 2014 with a dissertation on the nanoscale characterization of self-assembled and nanostructured systems using scanning probe techniques.

In 2015, he joined the Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy group at ICN2 as a lab technician, later promoted to Research Engineer. He led the operation and development of ultra-high vacuum and low-temperature STM systems, coordinated the installation of a MBE/STM chamber at the ALBA synchrotron, and managed technical processes, safety, and procurement for the group. He also provided technical and scientific support and training to researchers, helping them operate complex instrumentation and develop experimental protocols. Additionally, he contributed to research on graphene nanostructures and surface functionalization. Since 2023 he is the Techinician responsible of the Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab at ICMAB.
