Intellectual Property and Copyright in the Context of Open Science: A Brief Practical Guide

Abstract

The issue of copyright in scientific production has evolved alongside the progressive expansion of open science as a new paradigm in scientific communication to society. What is the current European legislative context and the European open science policies, including those affecting research data, and how do they impact national regulation? What are the requirements regarding intellectual property in Horizon Europe and in the Estrategia Nacional de Ciencia Abierta? What is the specific content of the CSIC institutional mandate? What are the best practices and recommendations in this context for choosing and managing licenses, including alternatives to the well-known Creative Commons licenses? How is copyright managed in open access publications?

Short bio

Alejandro Santos has been a librarian and documentalist at ICMAB since 2004 and has been responsible for the delegated archive of scientific publications and associated datasets in the CSIC institutional repository since its creation in 2008. He has been a member of the URICI Directors’ Committee since 2011, a representative of ICMAB in the Open Science working group of the SOMMA alliance, and was part of the Dissemination, training, and awareness subgroup of the CoARA-CSIC commission.
