Abstract
The Microfluidics Cluster UPV/EHU at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is dedicated to advancing microtechnologies for Lab-on-a-Chip applications, with research organized around five key pillars: microfluidic components, functional materials, surface engineering, cells-on-chips, and integrated microsystems. In this talk, we’ll highlight a range of our innovative projects, including microfluidic devices for whole blood separation, biosensing platforms for real-time cell analysis, and paper-based devices for detecting root exudates. These developments show how microfluidics aims to tackle critical challenges in healthcare, environmental monitoring, and biotechnology.
Short bio
Lourdes Basabe-Desmonts is the Director of the Microfluidics and BIOMICs Cluster at the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Her research specializes in developing microsystems for chemical and cellular monitoring. She studied chemistry at the "Universidad Autónoma de Madrid" and earned her PhD at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Lourdes also worked for six years at the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at Dublin City University in Ireland, developing microsystems for biomedical diagnostics.
Since 2012, Lourdes has been an Ikerbasque Research Professor and Principal Investigator of the Microfluidics Cluster UPV/EHU, focusing on microfluidics and nanotechnology for biomedical, environmental, and chemical applications.
Lourdes has published over 86 research papers and holds several patents, some of which have been licensed. She is a L'Oréal For Women in Science Fellow (2010) and an elected young corresponding member of Jakiunde, the Academy for Science and Letters of the Basque Country. Recently, she was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society. In 2026, she will serve as President of the prestigious MicroTAS Conference. Additionally, Lourdes is an entrepreneur, co-founding Alba Biotech S.L., which focuses on drug detection technology
