ICMAB PhD candidate Yan Gao (Solid State Chemistry Group, supervised by Dino Tonti) recently participated in the regional final of the Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship International Competition, held in Barcelona. The event attracted more than 200 submissions, highlighting breakthrough ideas in science and technology. Gao’s project on sustainable zinc-based batteries reached the 7th position, the highest rank without a cash award.
For Yan Gao, “participating in this competition has been an inspiring experience that connected research with real-world innovation". She considers that competing among so many talented teams was both "challenging and rewarding", and "it was a great opportunity to share our progress on sustainable zinc-based batteries and to receive valuable feedback from both academic and industrial experts.”
As recognition for her efforts, Gao has been invited to Shenzhen at the end of November to meet stakeholders and explore potential collaborations. This opportunity strengthens ICMAB-CSIC’s international presence and reinforces its role in driving innovation beyond borders.

The China (Shenzhen) Innovation & Entrepreneurship International Competition connects global projects with China’s technological ecosystem, offering access to markets, resources, and investment.
