Gender in sight, politics in play, science in troubles

Abstract

Gender is one of the most basic characteristics in a (social) human being. Although the concept should be clear, gender is controversial, and the different visions affect the vision of society in general, and science in particular. In this informal talk I will go through several open issues between gender, science and Spanish and Catalan policies, as seen from my perspective at the margins of gender.

Short bio

Dr. Juanhuix, after short period working on granular metallic alloys using X-ray spectroscopy at CEA-Grenoble (France), moved to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1996-2000) where she earned the PhD studying the structure and function of living muscles by small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS). she worked as a beamline scientist at the BM16 Beamline at the ESRF and moved to Macromolecular crystallography. She was later appointed as BL Responsible of BL13-XALOC at ALBA. The beamline was brought to user operation in 2012 successfully from day one. She is currently in charge of the microfocus MX beamline XAIRA, aiming to deliver first experiments this year, and the head of the Life Sciences Section at ALBA. She has led projects on the effect of the radiation damage on the structure of proteins, the use of scavengers to reduce radiation damage and the effect of irradiation-induced oxidative stress in the functionality and structure of aldo-keto reductases. She also has collaborations on cultural heritage and on supramolecular chemistry. She has also been involved in the development of legislation and health care system related to trans people from a feminist perspective.
