This award has been created to give institutional recognition to the importance of supervision or management, a crucial task for the professional development of research staff and for our institution.
It is an annual award that recognizes the career of research supervisors at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) for their work in supervising and training young researchers. The medal was created in 2022 and is awarded annually, with the second edition in 2023. This award is based on nominations: students (past and present) can nominate their supervisor (through an on-line form), who has significantly contributed to the development of their professional careers. The winner is then selected based on the supervisor's track record and training/career of the supervised nominators.
The medal is awarded in two categories: "junior" for researchers with less than 24 years since the completion of their Ph.D., and "senior" for researchers with more than 24 years since the completion of their Ph.D.
Prof. Campoy has been given this award in the Junior category. He is a physicist and his core expertise lies in combining novel material processing methods with advanced spectroscopic techniques focusing on renewable energy applications such as organic photovoltaics and thermoelectric generators.
About the award, Campoy-Quiles said: "I am deeply honored to have been recognized by the CSIC with the Margarita Salas medal for my career as supervisor, particularly for the outstanding level of the other candidates! It really touches me that the nomination for this award came from my current and former students! I am also deeply grateful to all the members of my group, past and present, for joining me on the adventure of science and allowing me to grow as a supervisor and colleague."
The award has the name of Margarita Salas, who was a graduate in chemical sciences. She was a disciple of Severo Ochoa, with whom she worked in the United States. She initiated the development of molecular biology in Spain, and developed her work as a professor attached ad honorem to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa in Madrid (CSIC-UAM).
