25 is the total number of young researchers who will conduct their PhD through the DocFam+ project. After the success of the DOC-FAM project in 2017 (the first MSCA-COFUND Project given to CSIC), this new edition of the programme will allow ICMAB to consolidate its leadership in intersectorial and international doctoral programmes.
The new DocFam+ programme, coordinated by ICMAB, includes the participation of six other partner organisations: ALBA Synchrotron, Catalan Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (ICN2), Catalonia Energy Research Institute (IREC), Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE), Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
This Welcome Day brought together the PhD candidates of the DocFam+ second call and also from the first call.

DocFam+ second Call
The 13 junior researchers of the DocFam+ programme have officially been incorporated to their work. These new doctoral fellows are staying at ICMAB (4), IMB-CNM (1), IREC (1), ICN2 (2), IFAE (1), ALBA (3) and UAB (1).
At ICMAB:
- Elena Murillo Vilella (Spain) supervised by Marta Mas Torrent and Anna Laromaine Sagué (ICMAB), will be working in bio-friendly and flexible electronic devices for sensing.
- Franco Castro (Uruguay) supervised by Núria Crivillers and Kasper Moth-Poulsen (ICMAB), will be working in photoswitchable Systems for Molecular Electronics.
- Joseth Alejandra Pachacama Ruiz (Ecuador) supervised by Núria Aliaga-Alcalde and Esther Barrena (ICMAB), will be working in sensing platforms based on functionalized graphene with bioinspired molecules.
- Marta Loletti (Italy) supervised by Riccardo Rurali and Juan Sebastian Reparaz (ICMAB), will be working in manipulating phonons at the nanoscale.
At IMB-CNM:
- Orlane Nocilardot (France) supervised by Neus Sabaté and Ferran Pujol (IMB-CNM), will be working in micro batteries for autonomous detection of events in biological environments.
At IREC:
- Irina Martynova (Russia) supervised by Andreu Cabot (IREC), will be working in catalysts for Li-S batteries.
At ICN2:
- Bushra Naz (Pakistan) supervised by Aitor Mugarza and Emigdio Chavez Angel (ICN2), will be working in development and application of Nanoporous Graphene Membranes for Advanced Filtration.
- Olga Griaznova (Russia) supervised by Daniel Maspoch (ICN2), synthesis of new porous materials via photocleavage of MOFs and COFs.
At IFAE:
- Sakshi Satish Madekar (India) supervised by Mario Martinez and Andrew Lundgren (IFAE), will be working in study of gravitational waves using LIGO-Virgo and technology development and physics prospects for the Einstein Telescope.
At ALBA:
- Santiago Alvarez (Peru) supervised by Carlos Escudero and Jordi Llorca (ALBA), will be working in preparation and characterization of novel catalysts for hydrogen energy technologies.
- Shreya Borah (India) supervised by Manuel Valvidares and Efren Navarro Moratalla (ALBA), will be working in 2D Van-der-Waals Artificial twistronic heterostructures for information technologies and their advanced synchrotron characterization (2D4IT).
- Wendy Camila Anzola (Colombia) supervised by Roeland Boer (ALBA), will be working in structural mechanism of Regulation of Transcription and Exchange of Genetic Material in Gram positive Bacteria and Land Plants.
At UAB:
- Haroon Muhammad Ali (Pakistan) supervised by Mar Puyol Bosch and Julian Alonso Chamarro (UAB), will be working in point-of-care biosensing devices for nanovesicle detection in healthcare applications.

More than just research
Besides the technical and soft skills training the DocFam+ fellows will receive (including communication and outreach seminars) they will participate in a retreat for personal development, ethics lectures and an ESADE entrepreneurship course.
The PhD candidates have high hopes for the DocFam+ programme, from gaining expertise in their fields and learning different technical and transversal skills to building a network or personal improvement. They also find the location of the centres they are hosted is privileged, close-by to Barcelona, a city which they claim to enjoy, both climate-wise and culturally.
