The internationally renowned Pint of Science festival, which this year will be held on the evenings of May 19, 20 and 21, inaugurates a new location, with ICMAB researchers as organizers and speakers.
Pint of Science is an international science outreach festival celebrated annually. Its objective is to open science to the broader public by explaining state-of-the-art research. Another strong point of the festival is that science is explained by the researchers involved in the projects, who go to bars to start conversations about their topics in a relaxed atmosphere.
This year, Pint of Science will also be celebrated in Sabadell, specifically at the Irish pub the Wild Geese, on Monday 19, Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21, from 7:30 PM. A group of PhD candidates from the European doctoral programme DocFam+ have been in charge of the organization of the Pint of Science events in Sabadell:
“I hope a lot of people take the chance to get to know this event, into which we’ve put a lot of effort,” says Karla Mena, the local funding coordinator. “Beers, science and prizes sound like a good plan to me!”
The 9 scientific talks will cover a wide variety of topics, from sustainability and health to the universe and AI.
Highlights include, on Monday 19, two talks by ICMAB researchers Giulia Pancotti (SUSMOSYS) and Valeria Blanco (SSC-BATTERY), entitled “Chirality in Light and Matter” and “Microalgae as new materials for batteries” respectively.
The programme is completed with talks from researchers from ICN2, UAB, ICE-CSIC, ICFO, IREC and CVC.
You can check the whole programme here.
To kick-off Pint of Science, a very complete activity will take place on Friday 16 at the bar in Plaça Cívica at UAB. It will consist of two talks: the first by Raul Andero, ICREA research professor at the UAB Institute of Neurosciences (INc-UAB), who will explain how such a complex machine as the brain works; and the second by Rosa María Sebastián Pérez, UAB’s Vice-Rector for Innovation, Knowledge Transfer, and Entrepreneurship. To complement the event, there will be games and prizes, a DJ, and a free drink for the first 80 attendees.
We encourage you to attend and spread the voice to anyone who might be interested. Activities that explain science, specially if they are organized by young researchers, deserve all the support they can get!
Apart from the Pint of Science organized in Sabadell, Huixia Lu from ICMAB has co-organized Pint of Science in one bar in Barcelona and will be kicking off the session on Monday, 19 May at 7 PM at the BlackLab & Brewhouse with the talk "An atomic peek inside the hydrogel to grow T cells".
