Why did you choose the ICMAB?

I did my masther thesis here so I decided to continue with the PhD.

How would you explain your research to a non-scientific audience?

Coat catheters with proteins to prevent them from becoming infected.

What are the main applications of your research? Could you give us an example?

The main applications of my research is for antimicrobial applications like for example catheters.

How do you think this experience will contribute to your training and to your future?

The PhD gives you above all a critical thinking that allows you to learn all kinds of skills and knowledge.

What do you wish you had known at the beginning of your PhD?

I wish I have known how to organize myself better.

Why did you become a scientist? Which have been your role models?

My scientific curiosity began in my second year of high school when I did my research work on nanomedicine.

Abstract

This PhD thesis is devoted to functional nanostructured molecular materials for biological applications. Among the different types of nanostructured molecular materials, the research is based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and organic nanoparticles (ONPs). SAMs were selected due to their high chemical versatility especially in the immobilization of biomolecules on surfaces to provide them with antimicrobial properties, whereas ONPs are highly tuneable and interesting to be applied for sensing applications, such as nanothermometry, in addition to their small size, biocompatibility and ease of processing. In summary, the strategies developed in this PhD thesis reside at the interface of materials science and biology and open new perspectives for the use of controlled nanostructured functional molecular materials for biomedical applications.
