His pioneering research in molecular chemistry, specifically in the design and synthesis of molecular systems that can perform mechanical work, earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Stoddart’s contributions have had a profound impact on the development of nanotechnology and molecular engineering, opening new possibilities for fields ranging from medicine to electronics.
Sir Fraser had a special connection to ICMAB and the local community in Catalonia. In June 2023, as part of the Magnet Project —a collaboration between ICMAB and the José Echegaray School in Martorell—he participated in a unique and inspiring visit. During this event, he was interviewed by students, sharing his passion for science and encouraging young minds to explore the world of chemistry. His warmth and ability to connect with the students left a lasting impression on everyone present.
For ICMAB, Sir Fraser's passing is also deeply personal. Our current director, David Amabilino, had the privilege of being one of Sir Fraser's apprentices during his career. Amabilino fondly recalls Sir Fraser not only as an exceptional scientist but also as a generous mentor who inspired those around him with his vision and humanity.
His visit to the José Echegaray School reflected his lifelong commitment to education and the advancement of science. Sir Fraser believed in making science accessible to all, and his encouragement of young students embodies the spirit of the Magnet Project.
The ICMAB community joins the global scientific world in mourning the loss of Sir Fraser Stoddart, a brilliant mind and a kind heart whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
