Basic understanding of strain-mediated magnetoelectric phenomena is crucial for any researcher working on materials where electronic and magnetic effects coexist. The fundamental characteristics that allow to disentangle strain-mediated effects from other, in systems where magnetoelectric coupling exist, are described. To illustrate them, several relevant results are summarized and divided depending on the connectivity of the constituent materials of the composite magnetoelectric system.
