Advancing brain research: Two innovative projects at ICMAB

This week marks Brain Awareness Week, an opportunity to highlight groundbreaking research in neuroscience and materials science. At the ICMAB, researchers are contributing to advances in brain diseases treatments through innovative projects that harness nanotechnology and chemistry for improved diagnostics and therapies. Here, we spotlight two remarkable initiatives: the spin-off LabsinLove (LiL), in which members of the Inorganic Materials & Catalysis (LMI) group participate, and the End-STROKE (La Marató de TV3) project, in which members of the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites (NN) group participate.

LabsinLove (LiL): Targeting brain tumors with precision

One of the most aggressive brain tumors, glioblastoma multiforme, remains a major challenge due to its resistance to conventional therapies and high recurrence rates. The LabsinLove spin-off, created by CSIC (ICMAB-CSIC) and the University of Granada, aims to revolutionize its treatment using Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The strategy involves linking boron clusters to specific molecules that selectively accumulate in tumor cells. Upon neutron irradiation, these boron-loaded cells undergo localized destruction without harming surrounding healthy tissue.

"This technology allows us to specifically load a cell with many boron atoms, significantly reducing the drug dose needed," explains Miquel Nuez, researcher at LabsinLove. “Moreover, the architecture of these molecules lets us add functional groups, making it easier to track drug accumulation in the tumor using imaging techniques” adds Rosario Núñez, co-founder of LabsinLove and researcher at the LMI group

Unlike current treatment options, BNCT reduces drug dosage while maintaining high efficacy, minimizing side effects. Additionally, these molecules are designed to be detectable via imaging techniques, allowing real-time monitoring of drug accumulation in tumors—turning BNCT into a powerful theranostic (therapy + diagnostics) tool.

Researchers from ICMAB-CSIC and the University of Granada participate in the LabsinLove spin-off. At ICMAB, researchers focus on synthesizing these boron-based molecules, while biologists in Granada conduct cell studies and neutron irradiation experiments. This multidisciplinary partnership enhances the translational potential of BNCT for glioblastoma treatment.

End-STROKE: Nanomedicine for stroke recovery

Stroke remains a leading cause of disability worldwide, with current treatments focusing primarily on restoring blood flow rather than repairing damaged brain tissue. The End-STROKE project, coordinated by Anna Rosell (Vall d’Hebron Research Institute, VHIR), explores the potential of nanomedicine to enhance stroke recovery.

"Minimally invasive endovascular interventions are already being used clinically after ischemic stroke, a disease that affects millions of people each year. These procedures provide an opportunity to reach the brain’s vasculature using microcatheters, which remains one of the great challenges in medicine," explains Anna Roig, researcher at the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites (NN) Group at ICMAB. "In the End-STROKE project, we propose leveraging this technique to investigate the use of therapeutic nanomaterials to enhance the recovery of stroke-affected tissues by improving their delivery to the brain."

The project investigates the endovascular administration of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanocapsules that will deliver bioactive molecules derived from progenitor cells. "We are studying the therapeutic value of PLGA nanocapsules for releasing molecules derived from progenitor cells, thereby enhancing recovery after stroke. Our goal is to validate this hypothesis in a mouse stroke model and measure changes in the brain after treatment using nanocapsules and endovascular injections compared to untreated animals or those treated with free molecules," says Anna Solé from the NN Group doing her PhD thesis in this area.

Researchers Anna Roig, from ICMAB, and Anna Rosell, from VHIR, have been collaborating on projects related to this topic for some years now, combining their expertise in nanomedicine and neurovascular diseases to explore innovative therapeutic approaches aimed at promoting brain tissue regeneration and functional recovery after stroke.

Funded by La Marató de TV3 (2023), End-STROKE brings together experts from ICMAB, Vall d’Hebron Research Institute, and collaborators in nanomedicine and neurovascular diseases. The project exemplifies how interdisciplinary research can drive medical innovation.

Pioneering materials science for neurological health

Both LabsinLove and End-STROKE showcase how advanced materials and nanotechnology can transform brain disease treatment. From precision-targeted therapies for brain tumors to nanomedicine-based stroke recovery strategies, ICMAB researchers are at the forefront of developing innovative solutions that bridge chemistry, physics, and medicine.

As Brain Awareness Week reminds us of the importance of neuroscience research, these projects highlight ICMAB’s commitment to advancing healthcare through material science and interdisciplinary collaboration.
