Abstract

During the last decades, chemical laboratories have focused their efforts on the development of analytical environmentally friendly alternatives based on the Green Analytical Chemistry Principles (GAC); being a key step in the whole analytical methodology, extraction has become one of the most important aspects to improve. In this sense, GAC should be employed in order to improve extraction processes related, for instance, to agricultural by-products by reducing potential environmental problems related to their extraction and revalorization, as suggested by the goal 12, “Sustainable consumption and production” of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. Therefore, greener solvents and techniques are required in accordance with a sustainable procedure, reducing energy, reagents, and increasing the security of the applied analytical methodology.

Short bio

Prof. Dr. Elena Ibañez is a Full Research Professor at the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL). Her activity includes the development of new green extraction processes based on the use of compressed fluids to isolate bioactive compounds from natural sources such as foods, plants and algae. She co-authored more than 370 publications and 39 book chapters. Editor of Journal of Supercritical Fluids, Contributing Editor of Trends in Analytical Chemistry, Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Nutrition (Nutrition and Food Science Technology) and Editor-in-Chief of Exploration of Foods and Foodomics.
