The prestigious Nature scientific journal celebrated its 150th anniversary on November 4, 2019. In order to commemorate it, the journal published a video on the role played by the journal in the history of science, and also prepared an interactive graph that explains the complex network created by the co-cited journal articles. More than 88,000 articles are published since 1900.
We would like to congratulate our colleagues from the NanoEduca programme, created by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2) and Centre de Recursos Pedagògics Específics de Suport a la Innovació i la Recerca Educativa (CESIRE), for the 2018 National Award on Science Communication (Premi Nacional de Comunicació Científica 2018), which they received last night, Tuesday 3 December 2019, at the TNC.
The GoNano project organizes the winter school "Creating Social Value with Nanotechnology" on 4-7 February 2020 in Barcelona. The winter school is designed to impart the findings from the project to early stage researchers and to address concepts such as RRI, co-creation, and communication applied to nanotechnology. The CSIC in Catalunya and the CSIC "Residència d'Investigadors" organize a cycle about cinema and science during October-November 2019 to celebrate the 150 years of the Periodic Table. The films that will be shown (for free!) are: "Marie Curie", Temple Grandin", "Wall-E" and "Her". All the films will be on Friday at 6:00 pm, and will be introduced by a CSIC researcher.

Unfortunately, our good friend, collaborator and benefactor or many ICMAB researchers, Dr. Massimo Marezio, passed away last May 13, 2019, in his hometown, Rome. Prof. Xavier Obradors, who met him while he was doing his PhD thesis in Grenoble, has written him some words as an obituary in the form of a last personal letter. Read it here. On May 20, 2019, this year's World Metrology Day, the changes in the definitions of the International System of Units (SI) were accepted. All the units, now, depend on the laws of nature, instead of depending on physical artefacts. The "Big Kilo" as we knew it, will no longer be the reference to the "kilo". Instead, this unit will be based on the Planck constant, as the "meter" is based on the speed of light. In the redefinition, four of the seven SI base units – the kilogram, ampere, kelvin, and mole – were redefined by setting exact numerical values for the Planck constant (h), the elementary electric charge (e), the Boltzmann constant (k), and the Avogadro constant (NA), respectively. The CSIC leads in solitary the international patents requested in Spain, according to the annual report 2018 of the European Patent Office (EPO). The institution leads the classification with 61 patent applications in 2018.

This could be the conclusion of the SOMMa 100xCiencia.3 meeting, held on November 15, 2018, at the National Center for Oncological Research (CNIO), organized by SOMMa, the alliance of Severo Ochoa Centers and Maria de Maeztu Units of Excellence to promote the excellence of research in Spain. Representatives of the 41 SOMMa members gathered in this meeting, which focused on the participation of society in science.

The nanoGUNE Winter School 2019 will be held in the nanoGUNE facilities in San Sebastian (Spain), from Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 February 2019.
