Announcing the launch of this year’s ICFO School on the Frontiers of Light.

Supported by the Fundació Catalunya – La Pedrera • Ignacio Cirac Program Chair, ICFO Schools on the Frontiers of LightFrontiers of Light aim at giving talented young researchers and students worldwide a first introduction to a thematic research area and a taste of an international research environment. They will incorporate a dynamic and social learning environment beyond participating in lectures, including group discussions, direct interactions with the lecturers, student talks, poster presentations, and visits to labs.

The "Desena Trobada de Joves Investigadors dels Països Catalans" (10th Meeting of Young Researchers of the Catalan Countries) was held this year on 29-30 January 2018 at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona. The meeting, organized by the Societat Catalana de Química (SCQ) is held every two years. This year, many ICMAB members were there to present their work and meet other chemists and researchers. 

Richard P. Feynman was born on 11 May 1918. This new year 2018 would be his centenary, and to commemorate it, EspaiNANO, the group from the Catalan Association fos Scientific Communication for the Communication and Outreach of Nanotechnology, has organized a variety of activities and events. ICMAB also collaborates in the organization of this celebration, called FeynmanTotal. 

Nanotech France 2018, the 4th edition of the international conference and exhibition, brings together leading scientists, researchers, engineers, practitioners, technology developers and policy makers in nanotechnology to exchange information on their latest research progress and innovation.

• Organic semiconductors: hybrid interfaces and charge transport (Symposium J), organized by Marta Mas-Torrent et al.

• Nanostructures for phononic applications (Symposium N), organized by Riccardo Rurali et al. 

• Engineering of functional materials with chemical coating methods (Symposium T), organized by Mariona Coll et al.

On 21 - 25 May 2018 in Trieste, Italy, the Conference on the Complex Interactions of Light and Biological Matter: Experiments meet Theory takes place. A conference for experimentalists and theoreticians investigating the photophysics and photochemistry behind the interaction of light with the organic material that make up living systems.

On Thursday, 24 May 2018, MATERPLAT co-organizes together with NanomedSpain and the NANBIOSIS network, a morning event on Nanotoxicity (Jornada de Nanotoxicidad) at the Parc Científic de Barcelona to debate about the toxicity of nanoparticles and nanotechnologies in the field of health. 

Jaume Veciana, Scientific Director of NANBIOSIS-ICTS and researcher at ICMAB at the NANOMOL group, will be at the opening of the event. Attendance is free but online registration is needed.

On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) will host the XXX IEC Chemistry Debate "Connect the Materials Science with the young students". Susagna Ricart and Arántzazu González will take part in the event, which will start at 4:00 pm at the "Sala Prat de la Riba", as speakers:

• 5:00 pm: «Kit de materials a l’aula (ICMAB)» by Arántzazu González Campo

The 2018 International High Power Laser Ablation Symposium will take place on 26 - 29 March 2018 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the historic La Fonda on the Plaza. Dr. Eniko Gyorgy, from ICMAB, is Session Chair of the session entitled "MAPLE and Materials Processing." 

We announce the forthcoming symposium "Engineering of functional materials with chemical coating methods", organized within the E-MRS Spring Meeting in Strasbourg from June 18th-22nd 2018. 

The X edition of the GEFES meeting will take place in Valencia, 24^th – 26^th January, 2018. With the aim of becoming an interactive forum for discussion and a common space for young and experienced international researchers, the scientific GEFES 2018 committee has worked hard in order to offer an attractive scientific program with plenary and oral talks of a large variety of topics in Condensed Matter Physics.

The physicists Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director, and Ignasi Ribas, Director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, IEEC), gave a joint lecture for the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Institute "Lluís de Peguera" in Manresa (26 October 2017), in which they both went as students. Their dialogue "From nanoscience to space" was followed by an enthusiast audience eager to learn. 

Anna Roig, researcher at the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites (NN) group, participated on November 30 at the MetDrugs meeting,  this time focused on nanostructures and metal-drugs complexes for biomedical applications. Anna's talk was entitled “Iron oxide nanoparticles come in all flavours”. The scientific meeting was organized by the MetDrugs network and ICN2.

This year, to celebrate Christmas, on Tuesday, December 19, we will have with us Xavier Roqué, Senior Lecturer in History of Science at UAB and member of the Phylosophy Dept. and of the Center for the History of Science (UAB). Xavier will give a Christmas Lecture entitled "Re-reading Curie", in which he will suggest new readings of, probably, the best-known woman scientist of the twentieth century: Marie Skłodowska Curie. 

After the seminar, there will be the traditional Christmas Concert by the ICMAB choir and the Christmas Buffet for all our staff.  

On November 30, 2017, the FINAL of the sixth edition of the "Generació d'Idees" Program, organized by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) and the "Xarxa de Referència en Biotecnologia" took place. In this year's edition, two projects from ICMAB researchers were on the final: Plant Healing, with the participation of Agnesse Rabissi, from the NN Group, and Saddle Pro, with the participation of Pablo O. Vaccaro, from the NANOPTO group.

The winning project of this year's edition was "Nanoplastics", which aims to create a biodegradable film to increase the safety of fresh food packaging and to extent the shelf life of these products. The project is formed by researchers from ICN2, CRAG and INC-UAB.  

The first initiative to bring together scientific illustrators and researchers took place on November 29 at ICMAB, the Institue of Materials Science of Barcelona. Nearly 20 illustrators specialized in scientific illustration came for one day to our center to meet some of the researchers from the Institute and its surroundings.

On the afternoon of October 18, 2017, the 41 research centers and units recognised by the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu certificate of excellence formalized the creation of the Excellence Alliance (SOMMa) during its first formal meeting. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of State in R+D+i, Carmen Vela. The main objective of the Alliance is to internationally promote and strengthen the centers and units accredited for their excellence, and enhance the visibility of their research. 

The 100xCiencia.2 Meeting, which will gather researchers and staff from 40 Severo Ochoa Research Centers and María de Maeztu Research Units, will take place on November 2-3, 2017, in Alicante. The registration is already open at http://100xciencia.umh.es/.

A large portion of the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures (SUMAN) group are present at the European Conference of Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS) 2017 that takes place in Geneva between 17-21 September. Dr. Anna Palau gave an Invited Talk on "European progress toward nanostructure engineering in coated conductors".

This year, a group of Communication Officers of various research centers and scientific institutions, including ICMAB, will participate in a workshop at Campus Gutenberg, the summer school on Science Communication and Culture, in Barcelona, on September 18th. 

A workshop in condensed matter theory will take place at ALBA Synchrotron (Maxwell Auditorium) on September 18, 2017, from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, with the groups from ICMAB and ICN2. 

The 31st European Crystallographic Meeting, ECM31, will take place in the Palace of Exhibition and Congresses (PEC) in Oviedo, Asturias, from 22-27 August 2018.

The first edition of BCNspiracy, a science outreach event full of talks and workshops, will take place on September 30th at Cosmocaixa (Barcelona). It is organized by Hablando de Ciencia, a science outreach association that seeks to bring science closer to society and encourage critical thinking.

In the morning of July 17, the 2017 Boron-Chemistry Micro-Forum started in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, at Nanjing University (China). Prof. Francesc Teixidor from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) was Invited Professor at this micro-forum, which was divided into two sections: one dedicated to Research Progress reports, and the other one to Academic Lectures. 

The Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) celebrated its XXXVI Biennial Meeting in Sitges from 25 to 29 June 2017. "The Biennial" (La Bienal) as it is known by the Spanish Chemical community, is the forum which shows the vitality and the vigor of the Spanish chemistry, and ICMAB didn't want to miss this great event!

Bojos per la Física és un curs d'un any de durada dirigit als estudiants del primer any de batxillerat de la modalitat de Ciències i Tecnologia amb especial interès i talent per la Física.

L’objectiu bàsic d’aquest projecte és fomentar la vocació científica d’aquests joves i en especial el seu entusiasme per la física.

The 2017 E-MRS (European-Materials Research Society) Spring Meeting and Exhibit will be held from May 22nd to 26th in the Convention Centre of Strasbourg (France).
