The "Desena Trobada de Joves Investigadors dels Països Catalans" (10th Meeting of Young Researchers of the Catalan Countries) was held this year on 29-30 January 2018 at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona. The meeting, organized by the Societat Catalana de Química (SCQ) is held every two years. This year, many ICMAB members were there to present their work and meet other chemists and researchers.

Richard P. Feynman was born on 11 May 1918. This new year 2018 would be his centenary, and to commemorate it, EspaiNANO, the group from the Catalan Association fos Scientific Communication for the Communication and Outreach of Nanotechnology, has organized a variety of activities and events. ICMAB also collaborates in the organization of this celebration, called FeynmanTotal.

On Thursday, 24 May 2018, MATERPLAT co-organizes together with NanomedSpain and the NANBIOSIS network, a morning event on Nanotoxicity (Jornada de Nanotoxicidad) at the Parc Científic de Barcelona to debate about the toxicity of nanoparticles and nanotechnologies in the field of health.

The X edition of the GEFES meeting will take place in Valencia, 24th – 26th January, 2018. With the aim of becoming an interactive forum for discussion and a common space for young and experienced international researchers, the scientific GEFES 2018 committee has worked hard in order to offer an attractive scientific program with plenary and oral talks of a large variety of topics in Condensed Matter Physics.

The physicists Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director, and Ignasi Ribas, Director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, IEEC), gave a joint lecture for the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Institute "Lluís de Peguera" in Manresa (26 October 2017), in which they both went as students. Their dialogue "From nanoscience to space" was followed by an enthusiast audience eager to learn.

Anna Roig, researcher at the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites (NN) group, participated on November 30 at the MetDrugs meeting, this time focused on nanostructures and metal-drugs complexes for biomedical applications. Anna's talk was entitled “Iron oxide nanoparticles come in all flavours”. The scientific meeting was organized by the MetDrugs network and ICN2.

This year, to celebrate Christmas, on Tuesday, December 19, we will have with us Xavier Roqué, Senior Lecturer in History of Science at UAB and member of the Phylosophy Dept. and of the Center for the History of Science (UAB). Xavier will give a Christmas Lecture entitled "Re-reading Curie", in which he will suggest new readings of, probably, the best-known woman scientist of the twentieth century: Marie Skłodowska Curie.
After the seminar, there will be the traditional Christmas Concert by the ICMAB choir and the Christmas Buffet for all our staff.

On November 30, 2017, the FINAL of the sixth edition of the "Generació d'Idees" Program, organized by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) and the "Xarxa de Referència en Biotecnologia" took place. In this year's edition, two projects from ICMAB researchers were on the final: Plant Healing, with the participation of Agnesse Rabissi, from the NN Group, and Saddle Pro, with the participation of Pablo O. Vaccaro, from the NANOPTO group.
The winning project of this year's edition was "Nanoplastics", which aims to create a biodegradable film to increase the safety of fresh food packaging and to extent the shelf life of these products. The project is formed by researchers from ICN2, CRAG and INC-UAB.

The first initiative to bring together scientific illustrators and researchers took place on November 29 at ICMAB, the Institue of Materials Science of Barcelona. Nearly 20 illustrators specialized in scientific illustration came for one day to our center to meet some of the researchers from the Institute and its surroundings.

On the afternoon of October 18, 2017, the 41 research centers and units recognised by the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu certificate of excellence formalized the creation of the Excellence Alliance (SOMMa) during its first formal meeting. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of State in R+D+i, Carmen Vela. The main objective of the Alliance is to internationally promote and strengthen the centers and units accredited for their excellence, and enhance the visibility of their research.

In the morning of July 17, the 2017 Boron-Chemistry Micro-Forum started in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, at Nanjing University (China). Prof. Francesc Teixidor from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) was Invited Professor at this micro-forum, which was divided into two sections: one dedicated to Research Progress reports, and the other one to Academic Lectures.
