School on Multiferroics

1st to 5th of September 2008

We are pleased to inform you that we are organizing the “2nd European School on Multiferroics (ESMF-2)” which will take place from Monday 1st to Friday 5th of September 2008, at Campus Universitat Girona. This European School on Multiferroics follows the successful 1st edition which took place in July 2007 at Grenoble under the auspice of the European Network of Excellence “FAME”.

The targeted audience of -ESMF-2 includes both young and senior researchers new to the field of multiferroics, an attendance around 80 participants is expected.

ESMF-2 aims at building bridges of knowledge and cooperation between scientific communities that so far have been well apart. The lectures will cover understanding of relevant ferroic properties (ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity), as well as an overview on ferroic materials and finally, the more complex world of multiferroicity and multiferroic materials will be addressed. Emphasis on unconventional approaches to multiferroicity will be discussed. Conventional techniques for dielectric and ferroelectric characterization, addressing the critical role of boundary conditions will be included and complemented with lectures on advanced characterization. These lectures which provide an introduction to the field of multiferroics will be complemented by research-presentations on some of the current hot-topics.

The ESMF will be organized in the form of successive sessions, addressing the following topics,

    • Ferroic properties and ferroic materials.
      1. Oxides and beyond
      2. Size effects in ferroics
      3. Ferroic oxides on Silicon
    • Multifunctional materials
    • Theoretical approaches to multiferroics
    • Advanced characterization
      1. Dielectric characterization
      2. Proximity probes
    • Physics of interfaces
